2007 Stop War on Iraq
February 1, 2007 | |
Sisters of Providence protest the war in Iraq outside of the Terre Haute city building in January 2007. As women committed to works of love, mercy and justice in service among God’s people, the Sisters of Providence believe that peace is more than just the absence of war. A section of the Sisters of Providence Litany of Non-Violence reads, “Deliver us from the silence that gives consent to abuse, war and evil. Grant us the desire, and the courage, to risk speaking and acting for the common good.”

A section of the Sisters of Providence Litany of Non-Violence reads: “Deliver us from the silence that gives consent to abuse, war and evil. Grant us the desire, and the courage, to risk speaking and acting for the common good.” The demonstration is just one way some sisters choose to live out the prayer and act for justice.

Providence Volunteer Ministers Sarah Scheibe of Greenfield, Wis., Mark Rusch of South Dakota and Christina Blust of Dayton, Ky., urged onlookers to “Wage Peace” at the Terre Haute Stop the War on Iraq demonstration at the Vigo County Courthouse.

The demonstration in Terre Haute was part of a much larger anti-war demonstration Saturday in Washington, D.C., where thousands called for the withdrawal of troops.
