Sisters of Providence to host ‘Healing from Sexual Abuse: A Retreat for Women Religious’

All women religious who have experienced any type of sexual abuse or trauma are invited to join the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, for the upcoming retreat “Healing from Sexual Abuse: A Retreat for Women Religious.”

The retreat will begin at 1 p.m., on Friday, March 6, and conclude at 2 p.m., on Sunday, March 8. All meetings will take place in the Providence Hall Community Room.

Join facilitators Rachel Waltz, DNP, APRN-BC, and Sisters of Providence Sisters Jan Craven, Paula Damiano and Marie McCarthy and share your stories while focusing on healing and empowerment.

Waltz is a nurse practitioner and educator. She has worked for more than 30 years providing care to under-served and vulnerable populations, including low-income families, children, victims of sexual abuse and those struggling with addiction. She is currently an assistant professor in the school of nursing at Ball State University.

The weekend retreat will provide an opportunity for all women religious to join together and share their experiences with sexual abuse in a safe, restorative and anonymous environment, as well as having the chance to learn more about recovery, healing and empowerment.

Sister Paula said a conversation she had with Waltz helped create the retreat.

“Abuse of this nature doesn’t discriminate and we realize that there are women religious (sisters and nuns) who have experienced sexual abuse in their lives, either before they entered their community, or after doing so,” Sister Paula said. “Like many women, sisters oftentimes feel stigmatized by the incident and are hesitant to speak about it.

“This retreat will bring sisters together in a safe and prayerful environment, providing time for reflection, support, and if desired, conversation.”

During the retreat, there will also be time for quiet reflection, rest, artwork and connecting with other survivors. One-on-one counseling will also be provided for those in need of support.

Cost is $250, which includes meals and lodging. The registration deadline is Feb. 20.

Register online here or by calling 812-535-2952 or emailing jfrost@spsmw.org.
