SUMMARY:Evolution of Wisdom Thought
DESCRIPTION:Wisdom thought has\, in some ways\, evolved since “The Epic of Gilgamesh\,” the oldest extant literary work\, in other ways\, it has remained similar or even the same\, through to the 20th century. Each society — and the religions it has fostered — has produced its own unique form of wisdom while\, at the same time\, deriving from and building on some of the same or similar ethical and spiritual principles that have come before it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring these two-hour Saturday morning classes\, principles from five different societies and religious traditions will be examined and discussed. Those attending will be given the opportunity to read the short classics in highly accessible translations ahead of time\, which will constitute the basis for in-class lectures and for the discussions that follow. \n\n\n\nJoin us and Dr. Arthur Feinsod for the final Evolution of Wisdom Thought workshop\, from 9:30-11:30 a.m.\, on Saturday\, June 22. Each session will take place in the Community Room at Providence Hall. \n\n\n\nThe final session will focus on “Mohandas Gandhi’s Spirituality and Politics.” Staying in the 20th century but shifting to a Hindu perspective\, we will examine Gandhi’s spiritual principles and how they emerge from ancient ones set forth in “The Upanishads and The Bhagavad-Gita.”  \n\n\n\nWe will also look at Gandhi’s political philosophy of satyagraha and show its parallels with the civil disobedience tradition from Sophocles’ “Antigone\,” through Henry David Thoreau’s “On the Duty of Civil Disobedience\,” through Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” \n\n\n\nCost for each session of the series is $25. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, call 812-535-2952 or email provctr@spsmw.org.

Your presence will brighten a sisters’ day! \n\n\n\nTeen Volunteer Sophia Miranda\, right\, with Sister Kathleen Desautels\n\n\n\nMost of our volunteer opportunities are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Teens will gather at 9 a.m. in the lobby of Providence Spirituality and Conference Center at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Join us for a guided meditation based in eco-spirituality\, where you connect with the Divine through nature.  \n\n\n\nAs we wander among the trees\, you will have the opportunity to connect with yourself and listen as the forest offers you time to reflect on your life. Leave feeling grounded and calm as you re-enter the world with more clarity and peace. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe events will take place at 10:00 a.m.\, on Saturday\, Sept. 28\, Saturday\, Oct. 26 and Saturday\, Nov. 30\, at the St. Joseph’s Nature Trail at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. \n\n\n\nThe trail is a mown path through the forest. It is considered an easy trail with uneven ground and some slight inclines and declines.  \n\n\n\nYou are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and dress according to the weather. This event may be canceled due to weather. We will walk in light rain. \n\n\n\nThere is no cost to attend\, but donations would be welcomed.

The weekend or day retreat will provide opportunities for you to cultivate hope through time in nature\, creative expression\, contemplation\, community\, sacred spaces\, ritual and talks. \n\n\n\nRetreat facilitators include Sisters Paula Damiano\, Corbin Hannah\, Marie McCarthy\, Mary Montgomery and Rosemary Schmalz. \n\n\n\nThe weekend retreat begins at 6 p.m.\, on Friday\, October 18\, and concludes at 10:30 a.m.\, on Sunday\, October 20. DESCRIPTION:Are you on a journey of self-discovery or are you seeking an encounter with the Divine? Do you hold questions about the world around you and your connection to it? If you are searching for meaning with your faith in today’s world\, we invite you to discover our series “Mystics and Fellowship.” \n\n\n\nThere are four virtual-only sessions scheduled\, with the first taking place on Saturday\, Oct. 26. The remaining three will take place on Saturday\, Nov. 23\, Saturday\, Feb. 22\, 2025\, and Saturday\, March 29\, 2025. Each session will take place from 9-10:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur series will focus on a thoughtful question each month: \n\n\n\nOctober: How do I move through the stages of my faith into a more authentic and life-giving sense of belonging and communion with God and others? \n\n\n\nNovember: How do I reconcile with the brokenness and divisions in the local and global communities we live in? \n\n\n\nFebruary: How can I move forward when my daily responsibilities are a burden and despair keeps me from seeing my future? \n\n\n\nMarch: How can I commune with our Creator when the natural world around me is in despair? \n\n\n\nPlease join us as we gather together to share a journey of personal transformation in the company of the ageless wisdom of the mystics. \n\n\n\nCost is $25 per virtual session. All participants are asked to register three days prior to each session.

Become a part of the Sisters of Providence volunteer family and join together with a community of mission-driven individuals to make change happen. Together we can support the sisters to spread love\, mercy\, and justice in a world that needs relief and light. \n\n\n\nThe Sisters of Providence need action-oriented people to help in all levels of our organization. We have opportunities for people of all skill sets and physical/developmental needs. We have a place for you to make good things happen in the world around you. No opportunity is too small-you matter to us. You can directly help us make a difference because without our volunteers we wouldn’t be able to live our mission and do what needs to be done. \n\n\n\nPlease join us on Saturday\, October 26\, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. outside our Alpaca Barn for a volunteer mixer. This is a great opportunity if you are curious to find out how you can help us make a difference. SUMMARY:Forest Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Nature can teach us and heal us. Join us for a guided meditation based in eco-spirituality\, where you connect with the Divine through nature.  \n\n\n\nAs we wander among the trees\, you will have the opportunity to connect with yourself and listen as the forest offers you time to reflect on your life. Leave feeling grounded and calm as you re-enter the world with more clarity and peace. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe events will take place at 10:00 a.m.\, on Saturday\, Sept. 28\, Saturday\, Oct. 26 and Saturday\, Nov. 30\, at the St. Joseph’s Nature Trail at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. \n\n\n\nThe trail is a mown path through the forest. It is considered an easy trail with uneven ground and some slight inclines and declines.  \n\n\n\nYou are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and dress according to the weather. This event may be canceled due to weather. We will walk in light rain. \n\n\n\nThere is no cost to attend\, but donations would be welcomed.

During this free retreat you will experience the mission of Providence first-hand in the lives of our sisters. You will have opportunity to hear several sisters’ stories about their call and their lives today. You will experience how the Sisters of Providence live the call through prayer\, vows\, ministries and community life. You will come away from this weekend retreat with a feel for what life as a Sister of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods is like today. \n\n\n\nDuring this retreat you will also have opportunity to immerse yourself in our spirit-filled grounds as you focus on prayer and your own discernment.
