Healing from Sexual Abuse: – A Retreat for Women Religious

Women Religious who have experienced any type of sexual abuse or trauma, are invited to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods for a weekend retreat that focuses on healing and empowerment. This retreat is an opportunity for women religious to come together and share their experience with sexual abuse in a safe, restorative and anonymous environment. In addition to sharing stories, participants will have an opportunity to learn more about recovery, healing and empowerment. There will also be time for quiet reflection, rest, artwork and connecting with other survivors. One on one counseling will be available for those in need of support.

It is advisable that all participants of this weekend are already engaged in some type of one-on-one counseling prior to attending this retreat.

Rachel Waltz, DNP, APRN-BC

Rachel Waltz, DNP, APRN-BC, is a professor of nursing at Ball State University. Rachel has worked in the area of women's health for many years and sees the need for healing in the lives of so many women religious.

Sister Jan Craven

Sister Jan Craven is director of the Shrine of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and the National Shrine of Our Lady of Providence. She is co-director of Providence Spirituality & Conference Center. She holds master’s degrees in spirituality and in the philosophy of religion and theology. She is a former teacher, director of religious education, pastoral associate, provincial councilor and tribunal advocate as well as the former director of postulants at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

Sister Paula Damiano

Sister Paula Damiano is co-director of Providence Spirituality & Conference Center and has led retreats and workshops on a variety of spiritual topics in the United States and in Canada, Europe and Asia. She has a special interest in combining art and music in retreat work. She has a bachelor’s degree in art education, a master’s degree in spirituality from Fordham University and a certificate in business executive management. Sister Paula is the former high school teacher, diocesan vocation director, Congregation vocation director, associate pastor and provincial councilor, also served as a Sisters of Providence General Officer for 10 years.

Sister Marie McCarthy, SP

Sister Marie McCarthy, SP, has spent many years as an educator - first in the field of music, then in the interface between psychology, theology, and the arts. Sister Marie served on the faculty of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and the clinical and training faculty of the Center for Religion and Psychotherapy of Chicago before being elected to leadership within her Congregation. Following a sabbatical in 2012, she accepted the position of Associate Director of Programs for the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. Sister Marie has a passion for fostering human flourishing in all whom she encounters.
