Dementia is a syndrome usually of a chronic or progressive nature caused by a variety of brain illnesses that affect memory, thinking, behavior and the ability to perform everyday activities. Although dementia mainly affects older people it is not a normal part of aging. Learn about dementia in this three session series. Awareness and advocacy is the key.
Session #1 – Dementia 101 (Thursday, August 8, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. (EDT))
You are noticing changes. You or someone you love is becoming more forgetful. Is it dementia? Is it normal aging? Gain awareness and basic understanding about the disease and its resulting stigmatization, barriers to diagnosis and care, and impacts on caregivers, families and communities.
Session #2 – Dementia: Approach is Everything (Thursday, August 15, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. (EDT))
Learn creative approaches, skills and strategies for ensuring the comfort, safety and well-being of persons living with dementia and their caregivers. Best practices in the delivery of care for persons living with dementia will be explored along with practical tips and opportunities for discussion.
Session #3 – Dementia – Related Caregiver Support (Thursday, August 22, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. (EDT))
“God gave burdens, but he also gave shoulders.” – Yiddish Proverb. Caring for loved ones living with dementia is an honor and a privilege. But for many it is also wrought with overwhelming grief and isolation. Dementia is overwhelming not only for those experiencing it, but also for their caregivers and families. This is an opportunity for caregivers to share their stories, ask questions and receive support from others traveling a similar journey.
$10 per session or $25 for all three sessions.
