Rainy day on and off the farm

Tuesday was a rainy day in Vigo County, Indiana, but it didn’t mean everyone at the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice organic farm was sitting around twiddling their thumbs.  Three interns pictured above (from left) Sasha, Ezra and Elaine took these three young alpacas (Sullie, Danny and Lilah) out for a walk on leads, otherwise called halter training. Aren’t they a cute bunch (the alpacas AND interns)!

Then, a group of students from the sustainable farm at DePauw University at Greencastle, Indiana, visited.  Garden Manager Candace Minster showed them around and answered questions about the ministry. They’re pictured below with Director Lorrie Heber, Sister Mary Montgomery, Candace and myself.

And there is no way we can give a recap of the day without talking about the morning alpaca show at the Vigo County Fair in Terre Haute. White Violet Center is a co-sponsor of the Vigo County Alpaca Handlers 4-H Club. These photos are from the obstacle course portion of the show, which also includes showmanship.  Austin (in the jumping photo) is with White Violet Center alpaca Wynne. The other action shot is 4-Her Maddison with WVC alpaca Mandy.  The last photo is of 4-Her Maya with WVC alpaca Benny.

The rainy weather also meant this wonderful group of interns could spend the morning at the fair to support the young alpaca handlers! That’s Ezra, Alexis, Julia, Sasha, Becca and Elaine!

Also, let’s shine a light on Providence Associate Tracy Wilson, pictured below on the right, with alpaca show ring steward and former 4-Her Anna. Tracy is the alpaca club leader who volunteers a ton of time with these awesome kids and provides them with so many fabulous opportunities at her Aris Farms and at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.  Thanks for all you do, Tracy!

Well, that was a little peek into a rainy day on and off the farm at White Violet Center. Can you imagine what they accomplish on a sunny day?

What a wonderful blog! I felt like I had the joy of being with you all throughout the various parts of the day. You did a great job capturing the energy of the interns, the 4H-ers and of course of the ridiculously cute alpacas! Thanks for brightening my day.
