Remembering Sister Mary Patricia Carroll

According to the commentary spoken during her funeral services, Sister Mary Patricia Carroll “was committed to service to others, yet she requested little for herself.”

Sister Mary Patricia Carroll was born Eileen Carroll on Nov. 14, 1908, to John J. Carroll and Delia Lennon Carroll, in Revere, Massachusetts.

Sister Mary Patricia entered the Congregation in July 1929. She ministered as a teacher – mostly at the elementary level – in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts and Maryland.

She retired from teaching in 1974, but came to the Woods and began ministering at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

After returning to the Woods, Sister Mary Patricia also coordinated Eucharistic celebrations for Owens Chapel and helped volunteer in the dining room.

The commentary continued, “When others were too busy to stop to ask to be of assistance, Sister Mary Patricia was there to say, ‘May I help you?’ … It’s quite possible that those hundreds of children she taught probably remember her as the kindest teacher they ever had.”

She also had a brother, Father Bill Carroll, who entered the priesthood.

Sister Mary Patricia died on Dec. 18, 1983. She was 75 years old and was a Sister of Providence for 54 years.

She is one of the sisters pictured on the wall in the Shrine of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin. She and other young women are walking arm in arm in the train station out in Boston, getting ready to come to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods to become postulants! It is one of my favorite pictures!

So, where did she teach in Indiana. I often like to know if a Sister was at St. Catherine Siena or St. Joan of Arc in Indianapolis in the 50’s.

She was my mother’s aunt. A huge Red Sox fan. I remember being a young boy and reading a Ted Williams biography with her when she visited us at our home in the late 70s
