May 9, 2010: 6th Sunday of Easter

Happy Mother's Day! Show your mother how much you love her by obeying her as Jesus did.

Jesus said to his followers, “Those who love me will keep my word, and God who sent me will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Those who do not love me do not keep my word; and the word which you hear is not mine but the word of the One who sent me.”
(John 14:23-24)

Today is also Mother’s Day. The gospel for today is really appropriate as we celebrate and honor our mothers. Jesus always referred to his Father when speaking and acting, for his words and actions were in obedience to what God wanted and asked of him. Isn’t that how it should be with you in regard to your mother and father? We prove our love for our parents by obedience. That’s not the only way. Anything else we do doesn’t amount to much if we are not obedient. Jesus assures us in today’s gospel that if we “keep” or obey what he and the Father ask of us, then their love will shine forth through us.

Action:

Perhaps the best way to honor your mother on this day is to obey her. Why not all week? Work on making it a habit throughout your life.
