Sister Denise (left) gets Sister Tracey’s (far right) SP white cross ready for her, during her and Sister Anna’s entrance into the Canonical Novitiate ceremony.

Note: On August 2, Sister Anna (Tsai Ping) Fan and Tracey Horan entered the Canonical Novitiate during a beautiful ceremony held in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Enjoy their photo album! They received their white SP crosses to signify them entering a new year of formation and delving deeper into Providence spirituality, the Congregation history and legacy and personal, spiritual direction.

A woman’s second step in the initial formation process is to enter the canonical novitiate.

As a canonical novice, a woman spends this year at our motherhouse at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind., and focuses on spiritual growth while developing a fuller understanding of the Sisters of Providence.

The canonical novitiate experience includes:

  • living in the novitiate community
  • weekly meetings with the director of novices
  • studying Congregation history
  • service ministry
  • prayer life — art and spirituality
  • spiritual direction
  • solitude, reflection
  • Liturgy/Mass
  • retreats
  • community prayer
  • participation in Congregation activities
