PausePlayPlayPrev|Next Sister Barbara Doherty, coordinator of the Shrine of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, welcomed participants and guests Oct. 24 to the inaugural Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Fest. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Madrigals, under the direction of Michael Boswell, performed Friday evening in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Representatives of the Knights of Columbus Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Chapter of Terre Haute, Ind., led participants to the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin statue outside the church at the start of the candlelight procession. A Saint Mother Theodore Guerin 2009 Fest attendee joined in prayer and song. The statue of Saint Mother Theodore located just outside the church was a focus for many people drawn to the three-day Fest. Charles Fisher, of Arizona, reached out to touch the statue of Saint Mother Theodore. Fisher is executive director of Catholic Community Services in southeast Arizona and a friend of the Sisters of Providence. Sister Ellen Cunningham (right) and Sister Rosemary Nudd concluded the candlelight procession. All stood before an Indiana historical marker commemorating Saint Mother Theodore's arrival at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and honoring her contributions to the foundation of Catholic education in Indiana and other states. Friday night's festivities included a bonfire sing-along at the Lodge near Providence Center. Following Saturday's opening assembly, Fest participants venerated Saint Mother Theodore at her shrine in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Teresa Clark presented the Saturday program, "Mother Theodore in Sculpture". Clark created the well-known model of Saint Mother Theodore which later was turned into a limestone statue now stationed in Mary's Garden at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Br. Barry Donaghue, cfc, spoke about the prayerful traditions used at the labyrinth at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods during a presentation in the Owens Hall Chapel. People were invited to walk the labyrinth at their leisure. Vocation Director Sister Jenny Howard (green jacket) led discussion during the presentation, "Everyone Has a Vocation", at Corbe House. Sister Stacy Pierce (center) was one of the presenters during Saturday morning's Way of the Cross Justice Walk. Sister Peggy Lynch (second from right) led prayer with Fest attendees during the Way of the Cross Justice Walk. Sister Marianne McGriffin (center) conducted the "Praying with Icons" session in the Providence Center lobby. Barb Beals, of Arthur, Ill., has a quiet moment during the "Praying with Icons" session. Beals, a first-grade teacher, said her daughter is a Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College graduate. Sister Jody O'Neil conducted the "Art Reflecting Providence" session in the Roethele Art Studio at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. "Journaling with Mother Theodore" was a popular session led by Sister Mary Beth Klingel in the Conservatory of Music. Louis Hoelscher and Mary Ann Kelly of Corpus Christi, Texas, were fascinated and inspired by the Saint Anne Shell Chapel. Donna Watzke, a Providence Associate, explained the history of Saint Ann Shell Chapel to Mary Ann Kelly of Corpus Christi, Texas. General Superior Sister Denise Wilkinson, Sister Jody O'Neil, French Ambassador to the United States Pierre Vimont and Sister Barbara Doherty were on their feet clapping during the Nick Cardilino concert. Sister Paula Damiano joined in doing the hand motions during one of Nick Cardilino's songs. Sister Nancy Reynolds is seated next to Sister Paula. Nick Cardilino received a little help from the audience. Nick Cardilino, of Ohio, did a little dance during his concert Saturday night in Cecilian Auditorium. He co-wrote the song "Discover the Way" which became the theme song of the 2007 National Catholic Youth Conference. Sister Jane Marie Osterholt (left) took the opportunity with her sister, Theresa Dirig, to meet Nick Cardilino after the concert. Pierre Vimont, French ambassador to the United States, addressed those gathered Sunday morning at the statue of Saint Mother Theodore. Pierre Vimont said he had thought a lot about Mother Theodore and was grateful to have had the opportunity to come to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Gertrude Fitzsimmons Shaver shared her thoughts with those assembled at the statue as General Superior Denise Wilkinson, French Ambassador to the United States Pierre Vimont and Jim FioRito, the nephew of Sister Barbara Doherty, listened intently. Sister Barbara Doherty, who conceived the idea and was the driving force behind the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Fest 2009, is presented with flowers in gratitude for her efforts. The presentation was made by Sister Susan Paweski, who portrayed Saint Mother Theodore Sunday. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Madigrals provided beautiful music during Sunday's Eucharistic Liturgy in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. General Superior Denise Wilkinson, French ambassador to the United States Pierre Vimont, Charles Fisher and Sister Barbara Doherty participate in the Eucharistic Liturgy. The procession at the beginning of Liturgy started with the presentation of the banner carried by Sister Stacy Pierce. Whitney S. Kos, a senior at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a member of the Madrigals, served as cantor for one of the musical selections. Sister Jane Marie Osterholt was the second reader during the Eucharistic Liturgy. Father Dan Hopcus consecrated the Eucharist, with Father John Young of South Haven, Mich. Sister Rita Clare Gerardot (right side of alter) and Sister Joan Zlogar, Eucharistic ministers, prepare the Communion hosts and wine for distribution during Liturgy. Sister Ann Stephen Stouffer assisted with Holy Communion. Sylvia Brockman, director of Liturgy, waved streamers, leading the exit procession at Sunday's Eucharistic Liturgy.
