Stained glass windows can be seen on each side of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. They were made by the Bavarian Art Institute of Munich, Germany. They portray events of Christ and his mother Mary, as well as scenes from the Old Testament. (The Old Testament is the first of two main divisions of the Christian Bible.) The stained glass windows in the upper balcony display scenes of angels.
Do you like comics or graphic novels? In the past, stained glass windows were meant to work sort of like graphic novels do today. People who worked very hard and didn’t have the time or money to learn to read could visit the local church and learn the stories of the Bible simply by looking at the beautiful pictures in the stained glass windows and paintings they saw.
In the late 1800s, artists like Louis Comfort Tiffany brought stained glass into popularity again for all sorts of places, not just churches, including public buildings and personal residences. Sometimes these windows would tell stories too, and sometimes they were just pretty!
